I’ve got to admit, I’m not typically a fan of “how-to” books, but Rachel C. Weingarten’s Career and Corporate Cool was a pleasant surprise. Everything from the décor of the cover, to the witty and relatable nature of Weingarten’s writing makes the book a must-read. Career and Corporate Coolis an easy, fun and fact filled book, with lots of helpful tips from cover to cover.
I don’t usually finish a book in one sitting, but I couldn’t put this one down. Over the last few weeks since I finished it the first time, I’ve been referring back to it on tips regarding everything from how write an email to a client, to what to wear to my boss’s dinner party.
As the president of GTK Marketing Group, Weingarten has insight and knowledge about the corporate world and how to succeed in it. As a successful businesswoman, she has seen it all. Weingarten is a marketing genius, and she sure knows what’s in style.
Weingarten doesn’t supply readers with the mere surface level tip on how to behave in the workplace. She gives an in-depth tutorial on how to find the cool in you, and really shine in all aspects of the work environment.
Career and Corporate Cool is a culmination of her thoughts about the workplace told in witty manner that will leave you feeling ready to tackle the corporate world. This book literally covers everything; everything from fashion, to email etiquette to resume tips, to fitness and travel. This book is a necessity for all (yes men and women!)
Weingarten’s words of wisdom don’t read at all like a “how-to” book, but rather, like a conversation with an experienced older sister/friend. I felt like I knew Rachel by the time I got to Chapter 2, and just couldn’t wait to read on.
She teaches readers through the process of explaining her own life experiences, and has a way with words that left me laughing through every chapter, but at the same time, sticking Post-its on my favorite pages and jotting down notes to share with friends.
Sure, there are tons of tips on how to be a good intern, what to wear to an interview, and how to behave in a competitive work environment, but Weingarten covers every step of the way to becoming a successful and confident woman, regardless of the career path you’re headed down. She also differentiates between what’s acceptable in and out of the workplace, something I know many of us, including myself struggle with on a day to day basis.
One aspect of being a successful career woman that Weingarten stresses is finding confidence in you. Especially when embarking on a new career, it can be so easy to transform ourselves into someone we’re not in an effort to fit into a new workplace, and Weingarten helped me see, that it’s important to find what works for you, and you only. Want to know how? Well you’re just going to have to read Career and Corporate Cool.
