Sunday afternoon, 4:30 p.m. It’s the day before this story is due, and I am standing in front of my closet, a variety of items on hangers and shoe boxes strewn about my room. I have been asked to write an article about “what’s in your closet.” My first thought upon reading the assignment was “Oh crap. I’m in trouble.”
Sure, I listed fashion among my interests in my profile. I love looking through the pages of fashion magazines as much as the next college girl. I could easily spend what I have paid for four years of school on my favorite handbags, cute blazers, skirts and of course, shoes. I could fill my apartment from top to bottom with nothing but shoes if given the opportunity, like some kind of pagan shrine to the gods of footwear.
But let’s be realistic here. I am a small town girl in Arkansas putting myself through college. No daddy’s money and diamond earrings here. I’m more likely to get a new textbook than I am to get a new pair of jeans.
Not that I don’t have a sense of style. I know what is fashionable and what isn’t, what belongs in the pages of Vogue and what belongs on What Not To Wear. But my budget is more conducive to the casual collegiate uniform of holy blue jeans, my favorite Arkansas Razorback T-shirt and a dirty pair of Converse than the fabulous outfits I love from magazines and shows like Sex and the City.
However, I do manage to splurge every once in a while on things for myself, whether it’s a manicure, experimenting with a fabulous new hair color or my aforementioned weakness, a new pair of shoes. Holding a special place of honor in my closet are my black stiletto BCBG pumps. I am of the mind that everyone needs a nice pair of black heels. Or two pairs. Or three or four.
I got these on sale for about $90, which was way over my college girl budget, but so worth it. They are sexy, sleek and tall, which is an added bonus when you only stand five feet and an inch. Not to mention, a classic pair of black heels are always in style, and these are versatile enough that I can wear them out on the town, to a job interview or just whenever I occasionally feel like looking nice for class. Which is about once or twice a year. As for the other nine months you see me in class, I’ll be the one in jeans and a T-shirt.
