GIRL TIME
After a frenzied holiday season of shopping, parties, and finals, snap out of your sugar-induced coma and relax with the gals by hosting an indulgent girl’s night in fete. Stock up on a few party supplies, make a quick trip to the supermarket, light a few candles, and enjoy an evening tailor-made just for the gals.
THE INVITE
Choose an invitation that sets the tone for your party. Whether you’re planning a pajama-style soiree or a chic cocktail hour, there are many options available. For small gatherings it’s always a nice touch to send a handwritten invite through the mail (I like the “Cocktail Girl” stationary from Kate’s Paperie). If the party’s large, or time isn’t on your side, there are plenty of online options available, such as the tres chic www.iomoi.com or the old standby www.evite.com. With a few clicks of the mouse you’re on your way to hosting the party of the year--or at least of the semester!

SIP
Keep costs down by choosing a signature cocktail. Not only will you save money, but you can also let your creative side shine through. Browse online sites to tap into hundreds of delish recipes, or create your own by spending an evening experimenting in the kitchen. Personalize your drink by adding a whimsical swizzle stick, sugar coated rim, or fresh fruit. Add a special touch by setting out pretty cocktail napkins next to the drinks, which can be found at any party store. Don’t forget to stock up on plenty of ice, water, and soda while picking up the ingredients for your cocktails (or mocktails).
Here’s one worth trying, it is a berry-pink drink created at the China Grill restaurant in New York City:
INGREDIENTS
- Grenadine
- Sugar
- 1 ounce Stoli Razberi or other raspberry-infused vodka
- 5 ounces champagne
- Berries to garnish
Dip the rim of a champagne glass in grenadine and then dip in sugar to coat. Add 1 ounce chilled Stoli Razberi, or other raspberry-infused vodka, and top with 5 ounces chilled champagne. Garnish with berries: red currants, raspberries or gooseberries.
Mocktail Version:
Replace the champagne and stoli razberi with a raspberry flavored sparkling water, or sparkling cider, instead!

NOSH
Keep things simple and serve sweet treats and finger foods such as mini-cupcakes, chocolate & cheese fondue, and hummus with veggies. If you’re like me, you’d rather spend more time dressing for the party than cooking for it. Give yourself a break and pick up ready-made food items in bulk from stores such as BJ’s or Costco. A few seconds in the microwave is all it takes and your hors d’ourves are ready to go! Make the night extra special by scooping up cupcakes from your favorite downtown bakery or neighborhood coffee shop. These can be ordered in advance and picked up on your way home from class.

EMBELLISH
Set the mood and work with a small space by creating seating areas out of plush floor pillows. Pick up a bag of inexpensive tealights or pretty pillar candles to bathe the room in a soft glow. Not allowed to have candles in your dorm? String some pretty white lights around the room to create a similar effect. Food can be set out on decorative platters from your local gift shop or fave online store (once the party is over, these platters can double as trays for your jewelry or small trinkets). Simply placing platters of colorful cupcakes around the room can go a long way in creating a festive atmosphere. Finish up by setting out stacks of glossy fashion magazines, a few disposable cameras, and a good selection of chick-flicks.

SWAG
Don’t let your guests leave empty handed! Swag (or gift) bags are my favorite component when planning a party. Your guests will enjoy the gesture, and they’ll think of you every time they use their goodies. When creating a swag bag, think about the theme of the party, and choose items that reflect it. For this party, how about choosing a fun tote filled with slippers, a candle, and a fashion magazine? If you’re working with a tight budget, you can always find inexpensive goodies at your local craft store. The last time I went Swag Bag shopping I found loads of cute stationary, candles, and bath products all for around $1 a piece!
