What to Pack for Your Trip Home for Winter Break
By Ashley Yenick, Student at Merrimack College
Holiday break is coming!
You know what that means? It’s time for hot cocoa, no school and making snow angels! It’s finally time to ditch the books and start your winter vacation. Don’t know what to pack? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
1. Create a list
It sounds silly, but lists actually do help! I would separate your list into different sections with your favorite items that you want to take home with you for break. I usually write down some shirts or a couple pairs of pants that are my favorite to wear. So, how much is too much? That leads me into my next rule.
2. Prioritize
Being home means you can now do your laundry faster instead of waiting three hours for someone else to clear out that washer or dryer that you need in the campuses basement. To make it easier for yourself, only bring home a certain number of your clothing choices.
I’ve created a detailed list to make sure you don’t forget anything. Basically with my list, I’ve created it so you have a piece of clothing for each day of the week so that you never have to worry. I’ve also included how much to bring of each item. At the end of each week, you can do your laundry. That way, you’ll never run out!
Shirts
- Casual shirts: 5 for the week
- Sweaters: 3 to wear out with friends, family or significant other
- Dressy shirts: 2 for any occasion that might occur
- Sweatshirts: 4 in case you need to bundle up!
Bottoms
- Jeans: 3 for casual outfits
- Sweatpants: 3 for comfy days
- Leggings: 2 to wear with boots or around the house
Shoes
- Winter boots: 1 pair for the cold weather and/or snow
- Riding boots: 1 pair for going out with friends or for casual looks
- Sneakers: 1 pair for working out
- Slippers: 1 pair to wear around your house
Toiletries
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Hair straightener and/or curler
- Hair brush
- Blow dryer
- Hair products
- Skin care products
Everyday items
- Laptop
- Laptop charger
- Phone
- Phone charger
- DVDs (your favorite movies you want to watch over break)
- iPod/MP3 player
- MP3 dock/alarm clock
- Comforter and sheets from dorm room: This particular part is important because it’s important to wash your sheets every three to four weeks! Take ‘em home and wash them so you have fresh sheets and comforter when you come back from break.
- Your checkbook
Additional clothing
- 1 winter coat: A must if you live in a state with cold weather!
- 2 weeks worth of undergarments
- Your favorite 3 purses
- Some blazers or professional wear are optional if you plan on interning over your break
I hope this list helps you with your packing! On behalf of U Chic, have a safe and fun vacation. Happy packing!
