What I Wish I Would've Known: College is a Time for Exploration
By Mikaela Vournas, Student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Between the college application process and the day you move into your dorm, people will tell you a lot of things about what college is really like.
Every school is different and is experienced differently by each individual. However, there are a few things I wish I would have known before I started college.
College should be a time for exploration.
Many students feel like they need to know exactly what they will major in, what activities they will participate in and what kind of people they will be friends with. You will (and should) grow and develop in college, as your interests will grow and change.
Go to all your classes.
Skipping a class here or there adds up quickly. Drag yourself out of bed for that 8 a.m. lecture. It will be worth it when finals roll around!
Work to maintain healthy eating and exercising habits.
Many high school athletes do not continue their sports at the collegiate level, and the transition to a less active lifestyle and a dining hall with a dessert buffet could mean extra pounds.
Visit your professors during their office hours.
Utilize this time to get to know your professor and clarify course material. Having a good relationship with your teacher can lead to great opportunities -- internships, research assistant positions and letters of recommendation. Professors set aside this time for you and they are there to help!
