How to Have a Great Fourth of July (During the Week)
By Kelly Leslie, Student at San Francisco State University
The Fourth of July is always a sign that summer has officially arrived, in my world. Whether barbecuing poolside with my family or vacationing with my besties, it’s always the first summer occasion that allows me to gather with the people who mean the most to me.
Are you worried your Fourth won’t be the same because it’s on a weekday? I’m definitely not letting this stop me from having a blast, and you shouldn’t either.
You may not be able to snag a holiday getaway this year, but don’t let that get you down.
Here are some ideas that are sure to keep your holiday spirits up:
Grab your girls and spend a day in the sand. There is nothing better than a day at the beach, but it isn’t always possible with work, internships and summer school. For all you ultimate beach lovers, you can’t go wrong with a day spent catching rays by the waves. Don’t live near a beach? No problem! You can always invite your friends and family for a barbecue at your local pool. Take advantage of your day off by spending time catching up with the people you don’t always have time to see. You may not have time to stress about cooking food for all of your guests, so make it a potluck. Just ask everyone to bring their favorite dish or cocktail to share with the group.
Check out community events. Most neighborhoods have their own Fourth of July traditions. Find out where the nearest street fair or parade is going on around you and join in on the festivities. You’re sure to come across someone you know!
Don’t forget about the fireworks! The Fourth of July wouldn’t be the same without a fireworks show to end the day. Find out where there will be fireworks around you and grab your special someone to tag along. You may have to go back to work the next day, but that will be the last thing on your mind under the sparkling night sky!
Stuck in summer classes? Take the day to actually enjoy yourself and take a break from the week of class. Get your work done Tuesday night so you don't have to worry about anything but relaxing on the Fourth of July. Your social life will thank you later.
Have a great Fourth of July!
