College Chic: Jackie Wittlinger, University of Kansas

Name: Jackie Wittlinger
School: University of Kansas
Colors: Crimson and Blue
Mascot: Jayhawk!
Campus Vibe: Bohemian Hippie

Weirdest School Tradition: There is a school tradition that if you walk under AND THROUGH the schools World War II campanile before you graduate then you will never actually graduate. You can walk under it but not actually through it! This is why the graduates in the spring celebrate graduation by starting with a walk through the campanile. While it may be a superstitious old belief, it is one that most all students follow religiously!

Latest Campus Trend (Entertainment): The Barell House. Formally Last Call, The Barrell House is the new hotspot in Lawrence nighclubs. The Barell House is a dueling piano bar, the first of its kind in Lawrence, and was started by twin sisters in thier senior year at KU just last spring. It offers a huge layout, complete with two bars, and three "VIP" upstairs lounges that each have thier own theme.  While small dive bars are the norm in this town, the huge, red and black lounge, complete with pool tables, and black leather sofas offers something new to the Lawrence entertainment scene.

Favorite College Hotspot: These can change and depend on the circle you are in, but Massachusetts Street is and always will be the heart of Lawrence. It is the main street in Lawrence full of local dive bars (The Sandbar being my favorite) and concert halls. However if you are an underclassman, Greek, or celebrating a game day, the Tennessee/Ohio Triangle is the place to be. This consists of three bars, only a hundered yards away from each other - The Bull, The Hawk, and The Wheel. However If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Mass Street and the Greek Row of the Triangle, try The Jet Lag for great specials, The Ranch for a place to dance, and Louise’s West for Sunday/Monday fundays.

Best Thing About Being Here: The best thing is the beauty of the campus! The minute you enter Lawrence you  feel like you're, well, no longer in Kansas any more. The flat plains of the state are instantly replaced with rolling hills full of lush landscape and tree lined streets of every color. Walking to class here during the fall semester feels like you are in a beautiful painting every day. My next favorite thing about Lawrence is that its charm. Massachusetts Street is the heart of the town with locally owned businesses lining the streets, and only ONE Starbucks. On any given night you can find numerous concerts going on Mass in one of the music halls, or find a great underground coffee shop to study or socialize in. And if you’re truly lucky, you get to shut down Mass and dance in the streets to celebrate a national championship in basketball!

How I Show School Spirit: I'm the girl that buys every homecoming t-shirt, wakes up early to watch the parade, and volunteers for all my sorority’s events. Being active shows that you're not willing just be a number in a large school, but actually make a difference. There is also of course swimming in the Chi-0 fountain (huge fountain on campus) before you graduate, waving the wheat at the football games, and skipping a class in order to watch a KU game!
